"The Scarab’s name is Khaji-Da."
Jaime Reyes to Rudy Reyes[src]

The Reach is a biotechnological alien race.

History[]

The Reach were an alien species primarily known for the creation of biomechanical artifacts called Scarabs, which they released into space to conquer planets. During its interstellar journey, the Scarab was deviated from its course, eventually landinf on Earth, at Chichen Itza, during the Mayan Era, choosing several inhabitants as hosts, controlling them and granting them special abilities.

Dan Garrett and Ted Kord discovered the Scarab, which merged with Garrett to take it as a host. The two studied it, inspiring Kord to become a vigilante in Palmera City due to its inability to activate it on his own. Recognizing the Scarab's alien origin and destructive potential, he kept it hidden from the public and the scientific community at large. Due to Ted Kord's disappearance, the Scarab was discovered in the possession of Kord Industries, where Victoria Kord intended to weaponize it for military use, her team attempted to extract its data and reverse-engineer its power for the Project OMAC, identifying its creators only as a technologically advanced alien race.

Once the Scarab bonded with Jaime Reyes, the scarab revealed itself to be a sentient bioweapon of extraterrestrial origin, capable of forming a neural link with a host and reconfiguring its body into a living combat system. The Scarab itself, Khaji-Da, possessed knowledge far beyond human comprehension and spoke an alien language, indicating an artificial intelligence designed by a non-human civilization.

Khaji-Da referenced its own mission parameters, defense protocols, and host compatibility systems, suggesting it was designed for infiltration and combat, possibly as part of a larger galactic operation. Despite initially resisting Jaime's attempts to control it, interpreting threats autonomously, Khaji-Da eventually began to recognize moral boundaries, something its creators had not originally intended.[1]
