"Kord Industries faces an unprecedented challenge to secure our assets, both here and abroad, from our promethium mines in Guatemala, to our real estate developments right here in Palmera City."
Victoria Kord[src]

Palmera City is a large city in the U.S state of Texas.

History[]

Early History[]

"You're a Mexican in the Edge Keys, carnal. That progress is not for us. The poor are over here and the rich go over there, until the rich wanted to be here and pushed us out."
Milagro Reyes to Jaime Reyes[src]

Palmera City became a hub for Mexican immigration, especially when Edge Keys became a Mexican neighborhood on the edge of Palmera City. Eventually, Kord Industries and other companies such as Starbucks began taking over various sites within Edge Keys, displacing several poor families to build their establishments and promote commerce.[1]

Home of Blue Beetle[]

"What the hell is Blue Beetle?"
"Oh, you were a kid. It’s like Palmera's superhero. Like Superman in Metropolis or the Flash in Central City."
Jaime Reyes and Rudy Reyes[src]

Ted Kord, son of businessman Thomas Kord, began protecting Palmera City from crime under the secret identity of the superhero Blue Beetle. Using his own inventions, weapons, suits, and vehicles like the Bug Ship, Kord operated in the city and confronted various enemies, although he eventually mysteriously disappeared, with no one knowing his true identity. Consequently, his older sister, Victoria Kord, took over management of Kord Industries, turning it into one of the largest military weapons suppliers in the country.[1]

The arrival of Khaji-Da in Palmera City marked the beginning of a new era in the city’s history. When Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate from Edge Keys, unexpectedly bonded with the alien artifact, he became the host of a powerful biomechanical suit, transforming him into the newest incarnation of the Blue Beetle. The transformation, triggered while inside the Reyes family home, launched Jaime into a series of events involving Kord Industries, his family, and the legacy of the prior Blue Beetle, Ted Kord.

As Jaime struggled to understand and control the Scarab’s advanced technology, he was hunted by Victoria Kord and her enforcer Carapax, who sought to extract the Scarab’s power to complete the Project OMAC. Throughout his journey, Palmera City became both a battleground and a sanctuary. From high-speed pursuits through corporate zones to emotional confrontations in family neighborhoods, the city itself played an active role in Jaime’s transformation.

Jaime's eventual acceptance of his new identity as the Blue Beetle was solidified during a confrontation at a secret Kord Industries facility, where he chose to wield the Scarab’s power not as a weapon of war, but as a protector of his people. Jaime’s emergence as the new Blue Beetle symbolized a shift in Palmera City’s story, from one dominated by corporate control and inequality to one of grassroots heroism and cultural empowerment. Jaime Reyes became Palmera City's superhero, quietly guarding his community while carrying forward the legacy of the Beetle.[1]

Trivia[]

  • In DC Comics, Blue Beetle was originally based in El Paso, TX. However, in the film Jaime Reyes is located in Palmera City, a new locale created for the movie. Director Angel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña, explained the decision; "To bring Palmera City to the screen is fantastic in its own regard because Jaime, as we were discussing, Blue Beetle, the vision was to have Blue Beetle be on the same level as someone like a Superman or a Batman who have Gotham or Metropolis or cities that are the beating hearts of the themes of the comics, and to create a world for Jaime and to create a world where he feels he fits was really such a humbling and honoring experience as well," Xolo Maridueña said. Angel Manuel Soto added, "We introduced Palmera City as trying to put Jaime in a city that kind of like the same thing like Xolo said. Superman has Metropolis, Central City for the Flash, Gotham. Why doesn't he have his own city? He's f*cking dope. And that doesn't mean that El Paso is not dope. El Paso is awesome, and El Paso is very much present in the life of the family. But in service of positioning Blue Beetle as a potential leader in the DCU, Palmera City came to life, and thanks to Palmera City as well and the bigger world-building around it is what got us the theatrical."[2]
