- In DC Comics the Mutants are a dangerous Gotham City street gang who become enemies to Batman led by the Mutant Leader, a deformed sadist with incredible strength. His agenda is to wipe out the weaklings of humanity or assimilate them into his cult. The Mutants were created by Frank Miller, first appearing as part of his Dark Knight universe in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #1 (1986).
- According to Jay Oliva, the inclusion of the Mutants was Zack Snyder's idea and an homage to The Dark Knight Returns.[2] Oliva confirmed, "Zack always has a love for Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns so I thought it was a fun easter egg for him to throw that in there."[3]
