Michael Long was an officer of the United States Air Force and the loadmaster for the C-17 that carried Kal-El's starcraft into the Black Zero.
Biography[]
Black Zero Event[]
As loadmaster for the mission to drop Kal-El's starcraft into the Black Zero, Long's responsibilities included balancing and escorting the starship for optimal flight, as well as looking after passenger comfort and safety. Passenger safety was challenged when Lois Lane ventured too close to the open hatch. As he called out to her, Faora-Ul suddenly burst up through the hull, knocking Long through the hatch. His life was lost, but his mission was secure. Lois survived the ordeal, and while the starship was not dropped as planned, the C-17 collided with the Black Zero, creating the desired effect.[1]

Trivia[]
- While Paul Garcia, who played the character, confirms the character's name is Michael Long in the Man of Steel bonus features, the loadmaster in the novel is named Gomez.
- It's unclear how the loadmaster dies in the novel, as Faora's arrival doesn't knock him from the C-17 as it does in the film. There was no way for him to escape the C-17 alive either way, so he was either killed by Faora directly, or in the crash.
- In the novel, the loadmaster attempts to release the starship from the C-17 when Faora arrives, and Faora secures it.
