"Kahndaq needed a hero. Instead they got me. I did what needed to be done, and they imprisoned me for it."
Black Adam[src]

The Massacre in Kahndaq, also known as the Battle of the Champion, was a genocide that resulted in the deaths of millions of Kahndaqis after the release of the Seven Deadly Sins, caused by Teth-Adam.[1]

Background[]

"Long ago, we chose a champion and we chose recklessly."
Shazam to Billy Batson[src]

After seeing the courageous and heroic acts of Hurut, Shazam and the other members of the Council of Wizards chose him to be their champion and granted him the powers of the Egyptian Gods. Hurut thus embarked on several successful missions to help free the people of Kahndaq from their oppressor, Ahk-Ton. However, Hurut would soon come across a tragedy that would force him to make his final sacrifice.

Ahk-Ton sent his men to punish Hurut's family. Hurut arrived too late to save his mother Shiruta, who was killed in front of his father Teth-Adam. As he saw his father die, Hurut chose to bestow upon him the powers he had received as champion in order to save his life.

"He used his power for revenge, releasing the Seven Deadly Sins into your world. Millions of lives were lost. Entire civilizations erased from existence."
Shazam to Billy Batson[src]

After the deaths of his family by Ahk Ton's assassins, Teth-Adam sought revenge and killed those who killed his family and unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins on Kahndaq. As a result, the mass genocide killed millions of Kahndaqis and also caused the destruction of several other ancient civilizations.

Aftermath[]

Black Adam Teaser 02

After witnessing this horrible act, Shazam and his fought Teth-Adam which resulted in all their deaths, except Shazam, who entombed Teth-Adam deep within the Earth. Shazam also managed to imprison the Seven Deadly Sins into the Eye of Sin. As the centuries passed, Shazam grew old. So, he vowed to find another champion pure of heart to succeed him and his siblings should the Sins ever break free of their imprisonment.

In 1974, he chose Thaddeus Sivana as a potential candidate but Thaddeus was easily manipulated by the Sins. Therefore, Shazam deemed Thaddeus unworthy and banished him from the Rock of Eternity, though Thaddeus would spend his life trying to gain access to the Rock of Eternity and free the Sins after he believed no one was worthy of gaining the powers of Shazam.

By 2018, Shazam chose Billy Batson to be a final candidate as his successor. Billy proved himself worthy and was given the powers of Shazam to stop Thaddeus and imprison the Sins once more, also passing of the powers to his foster siblings and become local superheroes of Philadelphia.
