Production[]
Guillermo del Toro was hired to direct an adaptation of DC's Dark Universe for Warner Bros.[2] In March 2013, del Toro gave an update on the movie at WonderCon 2013. He revealed that the story was complete and he hoped to start the screenplay soon. The film's story would centre around John Constantine recruiting Swamp Thing, Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, Spectre, and Zatanna. The film would not be an origin story, with each character already established and elements of their backstory coming into play throughout the film.[3]
In May 2013, del Toro revealed that his script features Constantine, Swamp Thing, Madame Xanadu, Deadman and Zatanna as the team, with other "in the mix". He also revealed that he was still waiting for the go-ahead from Warner Bros.[4] The Floronic Man is confirmed to be an antagonist.[5] del Toro was asked if the show would be related to a proposed television show based on John Constantine, he stated he had free reign with the character in film format as the two would not overlap.[6] In late June 2015, del Toro pulled out of the film[7], though on October 8, 2015, it was reported Scott Rudin would take over.[8] It was announced in August 2016 that Doug Liman would direct Dark Universe.[1] However, he has decided to step down as a director due to scheduling conflicts. [9]
In August 2017, it was announced that Gerard Johnstone would polish the script as WB continued to search for directors. [10]
In April 2020, it was revealed that J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions would be producing a live-action series based on the Justice League Dark characters, which left no room for a separate movie.[11]
