Biography[]
Early life[]
Hurut was born the son of Teth-Adam and Shiruta in the nation of Kahndaq around 2600 B.C., growing up in a family enslaved by the regime of King Ahk-Ton, Hurut and his family were forced to work in mines, seeing the injustices around him, Hurut eventually developed a sense of justice, dreaming of one day improving the situation.[1]
Hoping for a better world[]
Trying to stop the gladiators[]
- "We have to do something!"[2]
"No. There is nothing we can do about their plight. This world is a dangerous one. I know you know this. We need to keep our heads down and trust that things will get better in Kahndaq one day. But that day is not today...[2]" - ―Hurut and Teth-Adam[src]
After finding a trinket, Hurut ran down the happy street to find his father Teth-Adam to show him that he already found a present for his mother Shiruta, to which Teth-Adam was buying apples. As they continued to advance down the street, Hurut observed how some gladiators were beating civilians, so he worried that they should do something about it trying to go to battle.
His father then stopped him saying that there was nothing they could do, rolling with him and mentioning that the world was dangerous but they had to hope that one day it would improve, but not being that day Teth-Adam took Hurut's arm and they walked away from the gladiators while Hurut watched them.[3]
Destroying whips[]
- "Breaking those whips only mearns than more ways to inflict pain upon our people will be used.[2]"
- ―Teth-Adam to Hurut[src]
One night, Hurut would leave his parents to go to the gladiator camps where he would infiltrate walking cautiously, at one point Hurut stopped and observed a gladiator yawning and about to fall asleep. In that Hurut entered a tent where all the whips were kept on a shelf while a gladiator slept and whispered like a sleepwalker, so Hurut would take advantage and take his knife.
Hurut then proceeded to take all the whips from the shelf and destroy them so that the gladiators could not mistreat people. Successfully escaping and hiding himself behind some rocks, Hurut then watched as the gladiators realized that they had been robbed during the dawn, blaming the gladiator in charge of the whips, so Hurut would begin to escape happily to the dessert returning with his father.[4]
Consoled by his father[]
Upon returning home, Hurut fell asleep until he was woken up by his father who informed him that the gladiators' whips had been destroyed. Hurut tried to hide that it was not him but Adam realized, so Hurut argued that this was the case. they could no longer harm people, but Adam explained that cracking the whips would only make the soldiers impose more painful ways to punish the slaves, as well as get less food.
When Adam explained that the soldiers did not need weapons to impose their force, Hurut regretted having destroyed the whips, and tearfully hugged his father asking him to forgive him, Adam then sought to comfort him by saying that he was proud of his sense of justice, but that freedom was only a dream and they could not do anything to obtain it, since they were only men and not heroes.[5]
Helping a family[]
While walking with his parents, Hurut saw a hungry parent with their children, so Hurut took a piece of his bread to give to the family, saying it wasn't much but it should serve, while his parents proudly saw his solidarity, stating that Kahndaq still had hope.[6]
The Revolt[]
- "I don’t need protection. I want to be free. If we fight together, we could overthrow the king."
"Let someone else be the hero... the graveyards are full of them.[2]" - ―Hurut and Teth-Adam[src]
While forced to work in the mines to search for eternium, Hurut saw how a crowd of slaves approached the Djau slave after he found the mineral, so Hurut intervened to defend the man, indicating that the real enemy was the oppressive forces and they were not to fight among themselves, then helping Djau by accompanying him to the gladiator so that he could exchange the eternium for a reward.
However the soldier proceeded to kill Djau by throwing him into the void, shocking Hurut, until Teth-Adam stepped forward to defend him from being killed as well. Once away from the gladiators, Adam mentioned that he couldn't always defend him, to which Hurut explained that he wanted freedom, while Adam told him again that this was impossible and to stop trying to be a hero, asking him to go back to work.
Once alone and reflecting as he watched his people being overexploited, Hurut returned to yearning to change the situation, gaining courage, Hurut ran to the gladiator taking the eternium from him, escaping to the top of a plateau while being pursued by the soldiers, where he raised his with the mineral in his hands, creating a triangle that symbolized Kahndaq, encouraging them to rebel against the tyranny, Hurut then was happy to see all his companions raise their hands as well, starting a rebellion.[1]
Champion of Kahndaq[]
Saved by the Council of Wizards[]
- "The wizards decided that he would be their champion. But after the champion's many victories, the king went after what Hurut loved the most. Our family."
- ―Teth-Adam to Hawkman[src]
As a measure to suppress the rebellions, Ahk-Ton ordered the capture of Hurut so that he could be publicly executed in front of the Kahndaqi population. As a gladiator prepared to decapitate him, Hurut was suddenly teleported by the Council of Wizards to a cave.
A confused Hurut overheard the sorcerers talking about how he had been chosen to carry magical powers after his acts of heroism, as they began to conjure to grant him the powers of the Egyptian Gods, until they shouted the word "Shazam!", making him his champion by being transformed into his maximum magical potential. After gaining his powers, Hurut led a revolt to free Kahndaq from the tyrannical king Ahk-Ton, achieving multiple victories.[1]
Transfering his powers[]
- "Instead of battling the king... Instead of saving Kahndaq... Hurut chose to save... me. But he couldn't save himself from the king's assassins. The powers were not a gift from the wizards... but a curse. Born... out of rage."
- ―Teth-Adam to Hawkman[src]
When Hurut found out that Ahk-Ton had sent soldiers to attack his home and kill his parents, Hurut went to the place, finding his mother murdered and his father badly injured, while Teth-Adam in agony lamented for not having been able to save Shiruta. Seeing his father's condition, Hurut chose to transfer his powers to him in order to prevent his death, asking him to say the word "Shazam!" with him.
Once the word was uttered, Hurut lost his powers returning to his normal form as he watched happily as his father stood in front of him at his full magical potential. However, Hurut was suddenly shot with an arrow by some Ahk-Ton soldiers, wounding him to death as he fell to the ground and Adam desperately tried to save him.[1]
Legacy[]
After his death, Teth-Adam was driven by despair and rage. As a result, Teth-Adam sought revenge against those who murdered his family and released the Seven Deadly Sins onto Kahndaq, killing millions. Additionally, he enacted his revenge on Ahk-Ton and destroyed the place in his rage, which also destroyed half of Kahndaq, which would lead to the him being entombed by Shazam. The people of Kahndaq recognized Hurut as their savior and champion, so much so that a statue was built in his honor. Over the years however, the statue's history became muddled and wrongly affiliated as depicting the likeness of Teth-Adam, an assumption that carried forth into the 21st Century.[1]
