The Great Darkness was a series of military campaigns fought by the New God Steppenwolf in an attempt to return to Apokolips and earn his place back with the other New Gods.[1]
Background[]
Invasion of Earth[]
Thousands of years ago, Darkseid attempted to conquer Earth to use the world as a test run for the Unity, while also seeking the Anti-Life Equation, a transcendental mathematical formula with the capability to eradicate free will. As he and his army of parademons arrived on the planet, he was met by a resistance force consisting of humans, Amazons, Atlanteans, the Old Gods, and a Green Lantern. The two sides ultimately clashed for dominance, with casualties on both sides. While Uxas made his way through his armies and easily and slayed Yalan Gur, he was wounded by Ares, forcing the invasion to retreat and leave behind the three Mother Boxes. After this, Darkseid vowed to find the Anti-Life Equation and claim all of existence. After his uncle Steppenwolf betrayed him, Darkseid sentenced him to conquering 150,000 worlds in Darkseid's name, and so Steppenwolf continued the Great Darkness until his death at the hands of the Justice League in 2017.[1]
