- "The entire Herrera family were hanged in a public execution."
- ―Amanda Waller[src]
The Execution of the Herreras was the result of a coup d'etat by Silvio Luna and Mateo Suarez to seize control of Corto Maltese.
Background[]
The Herrera family were a wealthy family that ruled the island of Corto Maltese for 100 years until the island was taken over by Silvio Luna and his right-hand man Mateo Suarez in a violent military coup in 2020.[1]
Execution[]
As a result of the conquest, the Herreras were hanged in a public execution. Despite the U.S. government not condoning the excesses of the Herrera regime, the Herreras were non-antagonistic towards the U.S. However, Luna and his regime were virulently anti-American.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "Tres de los cocineros eran primos segundos de los Herrera. Los puse ahí para que los demás empleados no se olviden.[2]"
- ―Mateo Suarez to Silvio Luna[src]
After Luna's regime had taken over Corto Maltese, they took control of a Nazi-era laboratory called Jotunheim where they had contained an alien starfish known as "Project Starfish", which he planned to use to attack powerful nations such as the United States and China. A week later, intelligence officer Amanda Waller sends Task Force X, a group of expendable criminals and super-powered villains, to infiltrate Jotunheim and destroy all evidence of Project Starfish. The team was led by Rick Flag and allied themselves with freedom fighter Sol Soria and the Maltese Resistance.[1]
Upon discovering that some cooks were second cousins of the Herreras, Mateo Suarez brutally killed them and left their heads hanging outside as a warning in case of rebellion, but ended up being scolded by Silvio Luna.[3]
After the team's successful mission, Waller was blackmailed into freeing the team from her control in exchange to keep Project Starfish confidential. The Maltese Resistance also overthrew the military leadership of Corto Maltese, putting an end to military rule of Corto Maltese and allowing free elections. [1]
