The El Train network, also known as the "El," is an elevated railway system that services downtown Gotham City, available 24/7.[1]

Overview[]

Built in the early 20th century, the El Train network is the cheapest transportation in Gotham, with base fare at just $2.75 for a single ride. An ElCard is required to travel on the El Train network, which are available in many hotel concierge desks and at tourist kiosks and automated payment machines in the stations themselves. One ElCard can be used by up to four people. A HyperElCard allows unlimited rides and is available in two timing windows: a seven-day pass ($30) and a thirty-day pass ($110).

The El Train network has been criticized for its noise, often crowded cars, and confusing tangle of elevated tracks. Efforts to modernize the system and make it more in line with the maglev monorails in Metropolis have been resisted by locals who take pride in the El Train's imperfections.

Route maps for the El Train network can be picked up at many hotels, eateries, and gift shops throughout the city. Poster-sized route maps can also be seen on display at several stations.[1]

Characteristics[]

Trains are identified by colors and numbers, and run both local and express routes.[1]

Stations[]

El Train stations are usually named for the street they're located on, or the closest landmark.[1]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The El Train network is similar to the Gotham City Rail seen in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
