- "Do you not understand? Krypton’s core is collapsing, we may only have a matter of weeks. I warned you, harvesting the core was suicide. It has accelerated the process of implosion."
- ―Jor-El to the Council of Five[src]
The Destruction of Krypton was the catastrophic implosion that resulted in the implosion of the planet Krypton, following the wear and tear caused by excessive harvesting of the planet's core.
Background[]
Destabilization of the Core[]
- "Artificial population control was established, the outposts on space exploration were abandoned, we exhausted our natural resources. As a result, our planet's core became unstable."
- ―Jor-El to Kal-El[src]
During an era of expansion, Kryptonian civilization undertook extensive cosmos travel, using specialized scout ships to colonize new planets. However, after millennia of technological development and galactic expansion, artificial population control was imposed that prohibited natural childbearing, leading to the eventual abandonment of exploration and colonization outposts. Consequently, a severe shortage of natural resources on Krypton arose, leading to careless mining of the planet's radioactive core, accelerating an upcoming seismic implosion.[1]
Kryptonian Civil War[]
- "Our military leader, General Zod, attempted a coup. But by then it was too late."
- ―Jor-El to Kal-El[src]
After discovering that the planet was doomed to destruction as a result of careless mining, the scientist Jor-El attempted to warn the Council of Five, but at the same time, General Dru-Zod and his Sword of Rao staged a coup against the Council, starting the Kryptonian Civil War. For his part, Jor-El managed to infuse the Growth Codex into the cells of his son, the first Kryptonian born by natural means in centuries, in hopes of preserving his race and sending him to Earth. Enraged, Zod murdered Jor-El, before being arrested by the Sapphire Guard and sentenced to the Phantom Zone along with the Sword of Rao.[1]
Destruction[]
- "Lady Lara, shouldn't you find refuge?"
"There is no refuge, Kelor. Jor-El was right. This is the end." - ―Kelor and Lara Lor-Van[src]
Not long after the Sword of Rao's sentence, Krypton finally imploded, fulfilling Jor-El's eventual prophecy. Lara Lor-Van stood on the House of El Citadel as she bid farewell to her late husband with the remains of his battle armor. Knowing the end of her planet had come, she stood and watched the collapse of her home as her service droid Kelor suggested she find refuge, though she claimed there was no refuge, and thus, that was the end for her. Accepting her fate, Lara, like all Kryptonians, perished in the implosion.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "The destruction of our world... freed us. We were adrift, destined to float... amongst the ruins of our planet... until we starved.[...]We managed to retrofit the Phantom Projector into a hyperdrive."
- ―Dru-Zod to Kal-El[src]
Krypton's implosion caused a chain reaction that broke the boundaries of the Phantom Zone, freeing General Dru-Zod and his followers from the Sword of Rao. Seeing the ruins of their planet, they accepted that they would continue to wander the cosmos until they eventually starved to death. However, Zod and his allies rewired the ship's engine into a Phantom Drive that allowed them to travel to any point in the universe. They began a long search of former exploration outposts in search of life, collecting only armor, weapons, and a World Engine.[1]
