Dan Garrett was the author of the anthropology book DECIPHERING ANCIENT EGYPT.[1] With funding from his student Ted Kord, Professor Garrett traveled to Chichen Itza, discovering a scarab-shaped object that had been on Earth for thousands of years called Khaji-Da, which fused with Garett to take him as a host.[2] Embracing the powers that the Scarab granted, Garrett became the first superhero under the name Blue Beetle.[1] Kord attempted to help him, doing several tests of what Khaji-Da would react on the human body, discovering that the only way to free himself was if Garrett died. Kord was unable to free Khaji-Da, leading him to hide the scarab on Pago Island and begin a career as the second Blue Beetle, using his intellect to develop his own technology.[2]
