The Black Zero Event was a terraforming attempt orchestrated by General Dru-Zod and the Sword of Rao to colonize Earth and turn it into a new Krypton with Kara Zor-El's Growth Codex.

The Sword of Rao opens fire on the military.
While in orbit of planet Earth, General Dru-Zod and the Sword of Rao broadcasted a message to all the planet's screens, threatening humanity to return a individual to their custody. Intending to extract the Growth Codex, Zod and his forces moved to Edwards Air Force Base, where upon discovering that they would not get the individual, they attacked the base and the soldiers. However, shortly after, Zod became aware of the presence of Kara Zor-El, who was watching him from the sky.[1]

The Black Zero begins to terraform Earth.
Eventually, Kara Zor-El escaped the base, while Dru-Zod regrouped his forces and deployed his flagship, the Black Zero, over the city of Metropolis, Delaware. When the Justice League arrived at the military base to stop their attempted conquest, Zod ordered the terraforming process to begin in Metropolis. Within minutes, the city was devastated by the Black Zero's gravity pulses, resulting in the deaths of many civilians. Among the citizens of Metropolis, a father and his son witnessed the release of the ship's gravity pulses, which forced them to flee alongside other people.[1]
