- "Our body's at the top of that building. We get up there, pull them out of the vault they're hiding in. Helos extract us off the roof. It's Miller time."
- ―Rick Flag to Task Force X[src]
The Battle at John F. Ostrander Federal Building was a failed ambush by the Eyes of the Adversary to attack Task Force X in their mission to rescue the target known as HVT1.
Background[]
- "There's an active terrorist event in Midway City. I want you to enter the city, rescue HVT1 and get them to safety."
"I'm sorry. Uh, for those of us who don't speak good guy, what is HVT1?"
"The only person that matters in the city, the one person you can't kill." - ―Amanda Waller and Floyd Lawton[src]
After being released from her artifact, the sorceress Enchantress took over the body of archaeologist June Moone, though Moone was able to control her, summoning her only if she said her name until she was manipulated into saying it while asleep, causing Enchantress to release her brother Incubus on Midway City and take over the city, turning several civilians and A.R.G.U.S. military into her Eyes of the Adversary to build her weapon to destroy all humanity, as well as begin her plan to retrieve her heart.
During the chaos, A.R.G.U.S. Director Amanda Waller kept her equipment and Enchantress' heart at the John F. Ostrander Federal Building in Midway City to keep an eye on Enchantress, thus ordering Colonel Rick Flag to assemble the newly formed Task Force X to save her, under the pseudonym "HVT1". Task Force X and the US Navy SEALs went to Midway City, being tricked by Flag that it had been a suspected terrorist attack and ended up fighting the Eyes of the Adversary as they made their way to the building, unaware that another military team had been turned into their new subordinates. In front of the building, Flag led the rescue plan in order to infiltrate it.
Battle[]
Infiltration into the Building[]
Frustrated that the military was targeting him if anything happened, Floyd Lawton opted to get ahead of things, easily entering the John F. Ostrander Federal Building, followed by the rest of Task Force X as the Navy SEALs aimed their guns at potential enemies, but realized that none were to be found after watching the security cameras, delighting George Harkness, who assumed the mission would be easy, though Deadshot threatened to kill him as they continued on their way before realizing that Harley Quinn had separated from the group, heading to a elevator.
Inside the elevator, Quinzel received a message from her boyfriend, the Joker, who assured her that he would come for her, rejoicing that she would be free until one of the Eyes of the Adversary appeared to her, but Quinzel was able to fight it off, killing it with her Chiappa Rhino 60DS and then fixing her hair. Quinzel was ambushed again, which she was able to kill with her abilities and her special bat, finally reaching the destination of the elevator, where she met up with the squad again, whom she greeted kindly while they were in position to take care of the new Eyes of the Adversary and continue their journey.[1]
Fight against the Eyes of the Adversary[]
- "I knew you'd come through."
- ―Harley Quinn to Chato Santana[src]
During their search of the John F. Ostrander Federal Building, Task Force X and the Navy SEALs were alerted by Amanda Waller that they were being surrounded by the Eyes of the Adversary, worrying the squad, putting them on alert for possible enemies. Suddenly, the Eyes of the Adversary appeared from the ceiling, so the military began to fire at their enemies, as did the rest of the squad, who fought back using their abilities. Several Eyes of the Adversary appeared from the walls, although they were eliminated by Killer Croc, Deadshot, Katana and Captain Boomerang, who survived thanks to the money he carried in his chest.
Harley Quinn defended herself with her Chiappa Rhino 60DS until an Eye of the Adversary was able to restrain her, but Quinzel did flips to swing at her enemy, killing two creatures. Rick Flag was once again taken by the Eyes of the Adversary in an attempt to kidnap him, so the entire squad, except for the renegade Chato Santana, went to protect and save the colonel from the Eyes of the Adversary while the military took care of eliminating the rest of the enemies, preventing Flag from fighting, since they could not let him die.
After ensuring that none were left in the area, the squad continued on before having to fight again when they saw that more Eyes of the Adversary kept appearing. In the firefight, Deadshot confronted Santana, berating him for not helping in the battle, although Santana claimed that it was better this way, frustrating Deadshot, who decided to provoke Santana into fighting. Filled with anger, Santana agreed to give Lawton the pleasure of seeing him in action, deciding to attack the creatures with his pyrokinesis, finally eliminating all the enemies. Shocked, Deadshot apologized to Santana because his plan was to encourage him to fight while Quinzel gave Santana a kiss for saving them.[1]
Rescue of HVT1[]
- "You might need to be careful. They think we're rescuing Nelson Mandela."
"I can take care of myself." - ―Floyd Lawton and Amanda Waller[src]
The Navy SEALs breached a wall of the John F. Ostrander Federal Building to climb the stairs in search of "HVT1" while being followed by the rest of Task Force X. As they climbed, Harley Quinn paused to reminisce about her past before being interrupted by Floyd Lawton who then returned to the squad. Near the vault, Rick Flag ordered GQ Edwards to contact Savior 10 to leave Midway City when they complete the mission, preventing the squad from entering the vault with him. Flag met with Amanda Waller and her team, demanding to know why they did not leave the city, but Waller claimed it was to investigate Enchantress and her Eyes of the Adversary, asking how he escaped from his custody.
Behind the squad's back, Lawton went down into the vault, discovering that HVT1 was always Waller, whom he warned the squad would kill if they knew the truth. Before leaving, Waller ordered her subordinates to remove the disks containing Enchantress' evidence, however, she murdered her own allies so that there would be no witnesses, shocking Lawton and Flag. After leaving the vault, Waller met up with the squad, who were shocked to see that they were to save her, threatening to kill her, however, Waller scared them off, threatening to kill them with the Nano-Bombs, and they followed her out of the city.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "The mission's not over."
"Nah, it is for me. We had a deal."
"Without Waller, you got nothing." - ―Rick Flag and Floyd Lawton[src]
On the roof of the John F. Ostrander Federal Building, Task Force X and the Navy SEALs took Amanda Waller to Savior 10 to leave Midway City, however, they discovered that the helicopter was taken over by the Joker and his gang, who with the help of Doctor Van Criss, deactivated Harley Quinn's Nano-Bomb, whom they helped escape, but after Floyd Lawton's failure to kill her, Waller ordered the helicopter to be attacked, presumably killing Quinzel and leaving in another, although she was attacked by Incubus and the Eyes of the Adversary, who kidnapped her to take her to the Midway City Train Terminal, where Enchantress recovered her heart while preparing her super weapon.
Knowing that Waller fell, Task Force X was forced to search for her, reuniting with Quinzel, discovering that Waller was captured upon finding the downed helicopter. After Rick Flag revealed the truth about the Escape of Enchantress, the squad went to Golden Tree Bar to rest after several battles they fought during their search and drown their sorrows. Soon after, Flag joined them, announcing that he defused the bombs in their necks, which would allow them to escape, telling them how June Moone was possessed by the witch and giving Lawton the letters sent by his daughter Zoe Lawton. Inspired by his daughter, the squad decided to support Flag, regrouping again with the SEALs to end the threat of Enchantress.[1]
