- "He was always tough. But over the years, he got harder. I mean, you figure he's seen some things."
- ―Sal to the other man.[src]
Some time after the Black Zero Event, two low-level criminals are working alongside Firefly on a job to torch some criminal merchandise in a warehouse in Gotham City, while discussing the Batman in the process. Sal tells the younger one how when the Batman first started appearing in his youth, he would swiftly and stealthily capture criminals without being seen. However, he recalls more recently about a friend of his named Pete Doumanian who was caught breaking and entering by the Batman, who then proceeded to brutally cripple him. He proceeds to say that back then Batman was tough, but since the Battle of Metropolis, he's become especially brutal and violent to criminals. Sal ponders if the presence of aliens with unfathomable power has affected the Batman's attitude and outlook on the world. Firefly finishes his work, and gives the two criminals two minutes before he detonates the fire bombs. Suddenly, Batman appears and uses a batarang to destroy the detonator held by Firefly, and proceeds to engage Firefly, who uses his flamethrower to burn and suffocate the Dark Knight. Using his cape to block his flames and a respirator to breath, Batman ultimately subdues him, and leaves the two low-level criminals tied up on a sidewalk, for the Gotham City Police Department to find. Elsewhere, Lex Luthor watches the events unfold from LexCorp, via a CCTV that he had placed at the scene beforehand.
