Reports have been saying that Robert Pattinson's Batman movie will feature The Penguin and Catwoman as the villains. Of course this raises the obvious question, how do we prevent this from being a repeat of Tim Burton's Batman Returns? And who should portray them?
With the Penguin, Josh Gad has been trying to get that role for a long time, and he certainly has the right physique and body for the role. But he's known for comedy and being Olaf in Frozen. Do you think he could portray Oswald Cobblepot? As for avoiding comparisons to Danny Devito's Penguin, I have just the answer. In the comics, some writers portray Penguin as one of Gotham's most respected citizens, who secretly conducts all sorts of crime behind the scenes. I think the latter portrayal is the one that would work better, Penguin is using connections in the underworld to expand his power, wealth and influence.
As for Catwoman, as of right now, I can't think of any actresses who would fit Selina Kyle well. Funny enough, many people think Kristin Stewart would do well in that role. And if Batman were played by someone different, she could do well, but since both she and Pattinson were both in the Twilight series, and reportedly hated working with each other, and still get flak thrown at them for those movies, I think putting them on camera with each other would be a bad idea. Were she slightly older and taller, Maisie Williams might work as she is known for Arya Stark, who is also a master of stealth. But if you know any actresses who could play Catwoman, by all means, please say so.
As for how Catwoman should be portrayed, as usual, she is an on and off ally and enemy of Batman who will aid him against the Penguin one minute, and the next minute, steal a priceless ruby. But in more recent comics, some writers have portrayed Catwoman as a thief/vigilante who steals from the corrupt elite of Gotham in order to look out for the homeless outcasts of Gotham, improve the living standards, and ensure that the environment is safe. And in today's world of people distrusting the rich, our leaders, and people caring about both the environment, and the homeless and outcasts of america, and living standards, a character like Catwoman could be just what we need. But I also have a new flavor of my own to add to this, make Catwoman a high functioning autistic.
People on the autistic spectrum sometimes develop a cat motif, due to their independent nature and juxtaposition to dogs, who can be compared to the neurotypical population. The logic being that most people are better at understanding and communicating with dogs than they are with cats, leading to some incorrectly believing cats to be cold and emotionless, even though cats can and will express their feelings, but in a different way(usually via body language). Similarly, some people might perceive that autistic people are similarly cold and emotionless because they don't show emotion in the ways most people are used to recognize. Another common trait of autistic people, is great skills with animals, and being able to bond with them more easily than people. This fits Catwoman perfectly.
Think these could work?
